Am I an artist (today)?

By what authority do I make such a claim? Well, we are defined by what we do. I am pursuing a broad project, as broad as my life, my life’s work. That sounds grand but the reality has more to do with a bunch of ordinary, little things.

My project is not only grounded in technique, and not only in aesthetics, and not only in language, but in all three and much more besides. The mix is volatile, and it seems to need constant adjustment.

The principal medium is the written word, with architecture, drawing and speaking as useful byproducts. We should all have the right to do such things, and you don’t need to claim the prerogative of an artist to create.
